LONGHOUSE FARM 2012 Tienhoven Residential Renovation Private |
The Longhouse Farm is a monumental building full characteristic features, such as a mezzanine floor with an alcove (the farmers sleeping place), the clear structure of the cow stable and the milk house. Throughout time the clear structure has turned into a labyrinth of walls and passageways. The Longhouse Farm has to become a family home, with an independent guesthouse and a writer’s office. The original structure of the longhouse is revealed in the plan. Where the front house meets the original cow stable is the main entrance. The entrance is clearly visible by its transparent appearance, with the pivoting door and double height open hallway. From here one can enter the front house, the cow stable living room or take the stairs to the upper floor, with on the one side the master bedroom and on the other side the bridge to the front house, to the other bedrooms with laundry- and restroom facilities. The haystack is the writers office, raised from the ground, from where one has a wide view over the open landscape. Simultaneously the view from the living room continues into the garden. The milk house is the guesthouse. Roof lights for natural light on the upper floor are added. In the cow-stable roof a long horizontal stroke of windows accentuates its horizontal earthly character. In the roof of the front house the windows continue vertically the position of the windows from the wine cellar and remain in line with the roof. |
